Our Cosmetic Responsible Person team have recently received a number of queries from clients regarding the use of QR codes on their cosmetic product labelling.
“Can a QR Code be used on a Cosmetic Product Packaging?”
In a word: Yes, however the mandatory requirements to fulfil the UK and EU Cosmetic Regulations under Article 19 are still required. The QR code is not to substitute this required information which needs to appear on the Cosmetic packaging.
The Cosmetic Product packaging may be small and simply designed, but this leaving little room for all the extra information your brand may want to give consumers about your product.
The QR (Quick Response) code is a useful tool and is small, free and simple to set up. Smartphone cameras can be used to scan the QR code to access valuable product information and other products.
Adding a small QR code and the instruction “scan me for more information! or using symbol, this takes the consumer through to a dedicated landing page online, full of product-specific information without compromising on product look.
Why have we not heard more about the use of QR Codes on Cosmetic Products. Well, although we need to keep at present to the CPR mandatory labelling requirements, a few pilot studies are still taking place to see, for instance, if the ingredient listing can be placed on the code.
For now, communicating controlled information regarding ingredients and their functionality and addressing consumer questions may be a good start in the use of QR Codes.
If QR codes are to be used to inform consumers, remember your Responsible Person will need the updated labelling and review the content online to ensure all is compliant.
